Navi Mumbai– The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has intensified its drive against single-use plastic, seizing 128 kilograms of banned materials and collecting Rs 2.2 lakhs in fines in a series of enforcement drives. The crackdown, aimed at mitigating the severe environmental and health hazards posed by plastic, has seen authorities targeting shops and businesses across the city.

In the first five days of March alone, NMMC's flying squads conducted rigorous inspections, resulting in Rs 25,000 in fines and the seizure of 5.50 kilograms of plastic bags and other prohibited items. Notable incidents include fines levied on Sweet Sagar in Koparkhairane, Bhushan Hotel in Rabale MIDC, and Vinayak Sweet in Gothivali village, all found violating the plastic ban.

"We are committed to eradicating single-use plastic from Navi Mumbai," stated an NMMC official. "These enforcement drives are crucial to ensuring compliance and protecting our environment."

The recent actions build upon a larger campaign that saw Rs 2 lakhs in fines collected and 123.100 kilograms of plastic seized in February. The NMMC has also actively promoted awareness through various channels, encouraging citizens to switch to eco-friendly alternatives like cloth and paper bags.

Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde has spearheaded the initiative by implementing glass and steel water bottles in municipal meetings, setting an example for the city.

The NMMC is urging residents and businesses to take responsibility and voluntarily eliminate plastic bag usage. "Citizens must understand the severe consequences of plastic pollution," the official added. "We appeal to everyone to embrace sustainable practices and help us create a cleaner, healthier Navi Mumbai."
