Washington, April 14 Former US Vice President Joe Biden has been projected to win the Wisconsin Democratic primary following the exit of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders from the party's 2020 presidential race.

With 89 per cent of precincts reporting, Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, has garnered roughly 64 per cent of the vote, followed by Sanders with 31 per cent, reports Xinhua news agency.

Sanders, who endorsed Biden for the White House on Monday, dropped out of the Democratic race last week, after Wisconsin held its primary amid widespread public health concern over the COVID-19 pandemic.

The state's Democratic governor had tried to delay in-person voting, but was denied by the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

Although in-person voting concluded last week, a separate court ruling restricted county clerks from releasing results until Monday.

Sitting President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, narrowly won Wisconsin, a general election battleground, in 2016.
