A 60-year-old homemaker was taken into custody for allegedly murdering her 80-year-old mother-in-law inside their apartment in Ambegaon Budruk, located off the Katraj-Dehu Road Bypass in Pune, on Tuesday afternoon. According to investigators, the incident occurred around 2 pm when only the two women were present in the flat. Senior Inspector Rahul Khilare from the Bharati Vidyapeeth police station stated that the accused woman’s husband, her two sons, and daughter-in-law were away from home at the time of the incident. Police officials said the family belonged to a middle-class background and lived together in a two-bedroom apartment in the locality.

Police investigations revealed that tension between the homemaker and her elderly mother-in-law had reportedly continued for several years due to frequent disagreements over domestic matters. On Tuesday afternoon, another argument allegedly broke out between the two women, escalating into a violent confrontation. Officials said the accused entered her mother-in-law’s bedroom carrying a kitchen knife and allegedly attacked the elderly woman multiple times on her chest and hands. The victim reportedly cried out for help during the assault, but nobody nearby heard her screams. Investigators added that the accused later slit the elderly woman’s throat, resulting in her death inside the house.

The victim’s son, who is retired, returned home later in the day and was left horrified after allegedly finding his mother lying motionless while his wife was still holding the knife used in the attack. Senior Inspector Khilare said the man immediately rushed to a nearby police chowky and informed officers about the incident. Meanwhile, the accused woman herself reportedly contacted the police control room and confessed to the killing. A police team soon reached the apartment, detained the suspect, and recovered the kitchen knife believed to have been used in the murder from the scene of the crime for further investigation.

Police officials said the accused woman was formally arrested later that night after investigators obtained permission from a local court. Officers from the Bharati Vidyapeeth police station continued their inquiry into the shocking domestic crime and recorded statements from family members and neighbours. Authorities are also examining the history of disputes within the household to understand the circumstances that led to the fatal attack. The elderly victim’s body was sent for post-mortem examination, while forensic teams inspected the apartment for evidence connected to the case. Further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
