From dinosaur-shaped robots at the front desk to automated helpers in rooms and shared spaces, the hotel minimises face-to-face human interaction. The concept appeals strongly to introverts and travellers who prefer privacy, offering a futuristic stay where technology replaces traditional service while maintaining comfort and efficiency throughout the guest experience.
The idea behind Henn na Hotel was conceived by entrepreneur Hideo Sawada, who wanted to create an accommodation where guests could check in and out without dealing with conventional reception desks. His vision has now expanded into a successful hotel chain spread across Japan. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by robots capable of speaking both Japanese and English. Guests simply choose their preferred language, and humanoid machines walk them through the entire check-in process, making it seamless, quick, and surprisingly engaging for first-time visitors.
The first Henn na Hotel opened in March 2015 in Nagasaki at Huis Ten Bosch, one of Japan’s most popular theme parks. It earned a place in the Guinness World Records as the world’s first hotel operated entirely by robots. Known for blending innovative design with advanced technology, the hotel offers a memorable stay. Guests receive in-room tablets, futon systems that adjust temperature based on body heat, and automated machines that simplify check-in and check-out, ensuring both convenience and novelty.
Today, there are around 20 Henn na Hotels across Japan, along with international locations in Seoul and New York. Each property offers distinct attractions, such as life-sized T. rex robots or hologram assistants at reception areas. Many hotels are strategically located near tourist hotspots and major train stations. After digital check-in, guests collect key cards before being greeted by a robot concierge in their rooms, which shares information, sings, gives updates, and enhances the overall futuristic hospitality experience.
