For Jay Thakur, the concept of art, storyboard and visual development, is more than just larger than life frames and pictures. Having equipped with a degree in product design, the youngster is making waves with his creativity alongside some of the biggest names. A visual development artist, the Pune boy was offered a job at Sony Pictures to work on the sequel to the Academy award-winning movie Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse, shortly after completing his program at ArtCenter College of Design, Pasadena. Exposed to a broad range of stories and artists at a very young age, Jay viewed everything around him with multiple perspectives.
However, it was his project, ‘The Aporia,’ which proved to be a game changer for Jay which was unique in every sense. ‘The Aporia,’ is about a prisoner who undergoes a new rehabilitation program. He is the first patient to be administered this simulation therapy procedure. The story describes his journey inside and outside to find a place in a reality that he wants. It tries to highlight how causation is an illusory concept, and the effect something has on us depends completely on how we want it to affect us.The inspiration for the project came from the need to find a better humane system of rehabilitation for prisoners, unlike the current structure of captivity and punishment.
Jay spent nearly a year on the project as he wanted every aspect to be authentic. In the end it all proved to be fruitful as the project caught the attention of Dean Gordon, the Art Director of Sony Pictures during a show hosted by his alma mater. The rest, as they say is history as Jay started his walk with Sony Pictures. Having made the big jump, Jay also had the opportunity to interact with Genndy Tartakovsky, of Samurai Jack fame which Jay had grown up watching. Now it is all about exploring new things and going to the next level for this Pune boy who aims at changing the landscape of live action and sci-films in India.
