According to information received, demolition work of the old ticket office at Central Railway’s Atgaon station was in progress. On Friday afternoon, a section of the adjoining staircase collapsed, trapping two labourers working at the site under the structure. Police initially managed to rescue one of the labourers. As he sustained a severe leg injury, he was shifted to Shahapur Sub-District Hospital for treatment.
The second labourer, however, was crushed under the collapsed portion of the staircase inside the ticket office and died on the spot. Eventually, with the help of a gas cutter, the police cut through the iron staircase and successfully retrieved the deceased labourer. His body has been sent to the sub-district hospital for post-mortem examination.
