Aurangabad, July 13:

Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University has started planting 6,000 trees on the campus under Miyawaki dense forest project.

Vice-chancellor Dr Pramod Yeole inaugurated the campaign by planting a tree. Eco-Sattva Environmental Solutions will help the university in the project.

Pro-VC Dr Shyam Shirsath, registrar Dr Jaishree Suryavanshi, director of Eco-Sattva Natasha Zarin, Dr T T Patil, managing director of Grind Master Milind Kelkar, project officer of Bharat Abhiyan Amrapali Tribhuvan and others were present.

The trees will be planted on half acres of land near the Ph D students hostel.

VC Dr Pramod Yeole said that the university campus in the city is known as the oxygen hub. He said that increasing urbanisation is a result of cement jungle, so efforts are being made to keep Bamu campus greener and natural.

The ‘Miyawaki Method’ invented by and named after Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki is a unique technique to grow forests.

Under the approach, dozens of native species are planted in the same area, close to each other, which ensures that the plants receive sunlight only from the top and grow upwards than sideways. It requires very little space (a minimum of 20 square feet), plants grow ten times faster, and the forest becomes maintenance-free after some years.
