Autism and Epilepsy: Experts Warn of a Strong Link

A strong connection between autism and epilepsy was highlighted at a workshop held on World Epilepsy Day. Pediatric neurologist Dr. Varsha Vaidya emphasized that autistic children face a higher risk of epilepsy, particularly between the ages of 1-5 and 10-15, due to rapid brain changes.

The workshop was organized by Aarambh, a school for children with autism and developmental disabilities, in collaboration with Praaj Foundation. Aarambh’s director Ambika Takalkar, parent representative Mansi Ralegaonkar and Dr Vaidya inaugurated the event.

Epilepsy and autism: A growing concern

Dr Vaidya explained that while autism is a condition and epilepsy a disorder, both stem from chemical imbalances in the brain. She urged parents to closely monitor developmental milestones in children aged 1-5 and seek early medical intervention if irregularities appear. Adolescents with autism (10-15 years) also face a heightened risk of epilepsy, making timely awareness crucial.

Aarambh announced regular free workshops on autism, disabilities, and government schemes, encouraging parents to participate.

Keep young children away from reels

Dr Vaidya warned against excessive exposure to social media reels, stating that fast-paced content overstimulates young brains, increasing the risk of autism and epilepsy. The workshop saw active participation from parents, with teachers Ashwini Wandhekar, Vijayashree Jaibahar, Pallavi Sonawane and Neelima Wavare contributing to its success.
