Restoration and conservation work on the historic Bhadkal Gate will begin shortly. The old cement plaster on the monument will be removed and replaced with fresh lime plaster, along with specialised waterproofing measures to prevent leakage.

Currently, vegetation has overgrown parts of the structure and several portions have deteriorated. The state archaeology department will undertake structural strengthening, including reinforcement of the gateway, repairs to weakened sections, removal of damaged plaster, fresh pointing work and filling of cracks in the stone masonry. Special emphasis will be laid on addressing water seepage. The initiative is expected to enhance both the durability and aesthetic appeal of the monument, a key part of the city’s heritage identity.

Architectural features

Bhadkal Gate was built by Malik Ambar, the Nizam’s wazir, to commemorate his victory over Mughal subedar Abdullah Khan. The construction technique used for the gate differs from that employed in other gates and structures of the period. Its dome-shaped roof with sharp, vertical ribs was introduced here for the first time in the city. The structure is two-storeyed, with arched chambers on both sides at the ground level. The first floor, known as the nagar khana, is accessed by steps from the southern exterior side.

Six-month timeline

The removal of cement layers, waterproofing and related works are expected to be completed within six months, excluding the monsoon period, said Jaya Vahane, assistant director, state archaeology department.
