A 42-year-old cargo autorickshaw driver was crushed to death by a speeding pickup van while he was changing a punctured tyre on the roadside near Kanchanwadi Bridge late Wednesday night. Another person sustained serious injuries in the accident.
The deceased, Shaikh Afsar (42, Khaja Colony, Deolai), owned a goods-carrier autorickshaw and supported his family through freight work. On Wednesday, he had gone to deliver goods to Lasur. While returning, his vehicle suffered a puncture near Kanchanwadi. He rode a two-wheeler into the city to fetch the spare tyre and returned to fix it but as he was changing the tyre, a pickup van driven at high speed by Rameshwar Bhusare (38, Shivajinagar) ran straight into him and co-worker Shakil Kadu Patel. Afsar died on the spot; Shakil was seriously injured. Afsar was the sole breadwinner of his family, leaving behind a wife, two sons and two daughters. A case has been registered against accused driver Bhusare at Satara Police Station on the complaint of Tayyab Shaikh (42, Deolai).
