Doctors at government medical college and hospital (GMCH) gave a new lease of life to a nine-month-old baby girl after a date seed she had swallowed got lodged in her right lung.

The infant was experiencing severe breathing difficulty, but doctors successfully removed the seed through an emergency procedure on Sunday. The child accidentally swallowed the seed around 3.30 pm while playing at home. Soon after, she developed coughing, breathlessness and respiratory distress. Her family rushed her to GMCH hospital around 4.30 pm. Upon examination, paediatrician Dr Smita Bajaj confirmed that the seed was stuck in the right lung. Considering the seriousness of the case, ENT department head Dr Sunil Deshmukh immediately performed a bronchoscopy and skillfully removed the seed. The baby is now stable and out of danger. Doctors have advised parents to keep small objects, seeds and food items away from children and to seek immediate medical help if such incidents occur.
