Two drunk men allegedly assaulted police personnel and threw liquor at them after being asked to stop drinking on the road outside Crystal Wine Shop in Shivajinagar on February 16 evening.
The accused, identified as Sunil Dhanedhar and Rohit Ingale (both residents of Indiranagar), were arrested by Pundaliknagar police. The incident occurred around 6 pm when police personnel Prashant Narode, Amol Bakkal, and Vinod Gaikwad were on patrol duty. They spotted the duo consuming liquor openly on the road and instructed them to stop and leave. However, the accused allegedly abused the officers, pushed them, challenged their authority, and threw liquor at them. Ingale also attempted to physically assault the police and issued death threats. Police used necessary force to detain both individuals. Assistant police inspector Shivprasad Karhale registered a case, and the court later remanded the accused to Harsul jail.
Residents have repeatedly raised concerns about open drinking outside wine shops in Shivajinagar, Pundaliknagar, Beed Bypass, Cidco bus stand, and Mondha flyover. Near Crystal Wine Shop, food stalls reportedly provide glasses and snacks, encouraging on-the-spot drinking. The shop’s proximity to a residential society has caused daily inconvenience to commuters, with reports of intoxicated persons obstructing motorists. The guardian minister had also recently expressed concern over the growing issue.
