Drug addiction is the rising concern for the society. On the occasion of the International Day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking to be observed on Saturday (June 26), it has become very essential that awareness should be created among the people about the ill-effects of addiction.

The theme of the day this year, is ‘Share facts on Drugs, Save Lives’. It emphasizes on sharing the drug related facts and the solutions for the treatment of the addicts.

In the challenging times of Corona pandemic. People have realized the importance of healthy life and fit life. Children and youths are falling prey to various types of drugs. Chewing tobacco, smoking and consuming alcohol has become a common phenomenon in the society. Apart from that the addicts consume Marijuana, Heroin, cough syrups, sedative pills and other forms of drugs.

The children between the age group of 10 to 16 are more inclined toward the inhalant addiction, says psychiatrist and De-addiction specialist Dr Mangesh Kadam. This addiction is done by inhaling the substances like Iodex, Zandu Balm, Fevi Quick, Whitener, oil paints and other substances having strong sedative odour. These substances are easily available to the children at home and hence they can consume it even without the knowledge of their parents.

Dr Kadam says, children, today, acquire more information through the digital world. Hence, as curiosity, they start addiction for fun but later develop the habit. Many a times, the parents are also habituated to some addiction, due to which the children take the liberty and follow them. Hence, it is important that the parents should set an ideal for the children. They should be made aware of the fact that short term pleasure may lead to long term pains, he said.

The director of the Sarvodaya Vyasan Mukti Kendra, Satara area, Vilas Chandane said, consumption of marijuana is more common among the children between age group of 14 years to 25 years. Those who are working in the brick kilns and other industries where hard physical work is done are found more prone to addiction of Marijuana and other inhalant addictions. Children from the urban area, especially in the outskirts of the city are found to be added that in the rural areas. Parents should keep a watch on the activities of the children and should consult the de-addiction centre for counselling of their children and contact the psychiatric for medication, he said.

255.0196 kgs Marijuana amounting approx. Rs 12.75 lakh seized in past 6 months

The Aurangabad crime branch has taken stern action against the illegal trafficking of Marijuana in the city. The smugglers bring the Marijuana from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Orissa and other states. In all, 8 cases of Marijuana smuggling have been registered at various police stations in the city since January, 2021, in which, 21 persons have been arrested. The police seized 255.0196 kgs amounting approximately Rs 12.75 lakh have been seized in the past six months. The police after seizing the drugs deposit it to the narcotics department, the police sources said.
