Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:
Nearly Rs 3,000 crore is being spent under the new water supply scheme. Despite such enormous expenditure, several shocking issues regarding quality are coming to light. The welding of a new 2,500 mm diameter water pipeline came apart at Kaudgaon. As a result, the supply of water being brought to the treatment plant for testing has remained suspended for the past two days. Once the repair work is completed on Sunday morning, water will again be brought to the Nakshatrawadi water treatment plant.
Under the schedule fixed by the Bombay High Court, the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP) has been directed to begin supplying water from the new scheme to the city from June 12. Accordingly, over the past few days, procedures such as bringing water to the treatment plant, carrying out tests, and obtaining certification that the water is fit for drinking have been initiated. Water was brought up to the treatment plant on Tuesday (May 12). However, the very next day, the welding on the major pipeline at Kaudgaon failed. Repair work has been underway for the past two days and is expected to be completed by Sunday morning. Thereafter, water will again be taken to the treatment plant. The biggest question being raised is how the pipeline welding failed despite various tests already having been conducted.
Divisional Commissioner inspected the site
Divisional Commissioner G Sreekanth and Municipal Commissioner Amol Yedge jointly inspected the Nakshatrawadi water treatment plant on Saturday morning. They reviewed the water purification plant, bleaching and alum treatment facilities, MBR works, and other related projects. The divisional commissioner directed that the works be completed within 15 days and also instructed that water treatment should commence. MJP executive engineer Dipendra Korate, officials and employees, along with Khalil Ahmed of the GVPR company, were also present.
Focus on commissioning one pipeline
A joint meeting was recently convened by municipal commissioner Amol Yedge with officials from the MJP, GVPR company, and municipal engineers. The meeting discussed how water could be supplied to the city through the 1,500 mm diameter pipeline from the MBR facility at Nakshatrawadi. Instructions were also issued to complete, at the earliest, the work of connecting the old and new elevated storage reservoirs (ESRs) under this pipeline network.
