The defeat was LSG’s eighth in 11 matches this season and left them with only six points. Even if the Rishabh Pant-led side win all of their remaining three league matches, they can only finish with a maximum of 12 points, which will not be enough to secure a top-four finish.

Several teams, including Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gujarat Titans, Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, have already moved ahead in the playoff race, while Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders remain in contention.

Lucknow Super Giants failed to defend 203 despite a sensational innings from Josh Inglis, who smashed 85 off just 33 deliveries. Shahbaz Ahmed also contributed an unbeaten 43 as LSG posted 203/8 after being put in to bat.

In reply, Chennai got off to a flying start through Sanju Samson before youngster Urvil Patel changed the game with a breathtaking 65 off 23 balls. Urvil equalled Yashasvi Jaiswal’s record for the fastest IPL fifty, reaching the landmark in just 13 deliveries.

Although LSG fought back with wickets in the middle overs, dropped catches proved costly in the closing stages. Shivam Dube sealed the win for CSK in style by smashing two sixes off Aiden Markram in the final over.

The result kept Chennai Super Kings firmly in contention for a playoff berth, while Lucknow Super Giants became the first team to be officially eliminated from IPL 2026.
