India national cricket team former captain MS Dhoni has emerged as the highest individual taxpayer across Bihar and Jharkhand during the 2025-26 financial year, according to officials from the Income Tax Department. The announcement was shared on Thursday by Dr D. Sudhakara Rao, Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax (Bihar-Jharkhand), while addressing the media in Ranchi.
Rao said the combined tax collection from Bihar and Jharkhand during the financial year stood at nearly Rs 20,000 crore, with Jharkhand contributing a major share.
“The total collection from Bihar and Jharkhand during the financial year of 2025-26 was around Rs 20,000 crore, of which Rs 12,000 crore was collected only from Jharkhand,” Rao said, as quoted by news agency PTI.
He added that nearly 70 per cent of the total collection came through Tax Deducted at Source (TDS).
Rao also confirmed that Dhoni topped the list of individual taxpayers in the two states, although the exact amount paid by the former India skipper was not disclosed. “MS Dhoni was the highest individual taxpayer combining Bihar and Jharkhand during the previous financial year,” Rao stated.
Among corporate taxpayers, Central Coalfields Limited, Bharat Coking Coal Limited and CMPDI were among the highest contributors.
Despite retiring from international cricket in 2020, Dhoni continues to remain one of the most recognisable faces in Indian sport through his association with Chennai Super Kings and several endorsement deals.
The 44-year-old is currently recovering from a calf injury suffered before the start of the Indian Premier League 2026 season. Although he has been regularly attending training sessions with CSK, he is yet to feature in a match this season.
Meanwhile, CSK remain in contention for a playoff spot despite an inconsistent campaign. The five-time champions are currently sixth on the IPL 2026 points table with 10 points and are two points behind the top four. Chennai will next face Lucknow Super Giants on May 10.
