Amanpreet Singh Gill, a former Punjab cricketer, died on Wednesday, May 6, at the age of 36. The news was confirmed by the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) through a statement on social media. “Punjab Cricket Association deeply mourns the sad demise of Amanpreet Singh Gill, former Punjab cricketer and Member, Senior Selection Committee Punjab,” the PCA posted on X.

Reports claimed that Amanpreet Singh Gill had been suffering from a prolonged illness. However, neither his family nor the Punjab Cricket Association has officially confirmed the cause of death.

Who Was Amanpreet Singh Gill?

Amanpreet Gill was a right-arm medium pacer who represented Punjab in domestic cricket and was part of India’s Under-19 setup during the late 2000s alongside stars such as Virat Kohli, Manish Pandey and Saurabh Tiwary.

Born on September 16, 1989, in Chandigarh, Gill progressed through Punjab’s age-group cricket system and earned recognition for his disciplined pace bowling and all-round abilities.

One of the highlights of his career came during the 2007 Under-19 Tri-Series in Sri Lanka, where he played a key role in India’s title-winning campaign. Gill picked up nine wickets in five innings at an average of 9.44 and delivered figures of 2/14 in the final against Bangladesh.

Gill later went on to represent Punjab in first-class cricket, where he played six matches and claimed 11 wickets, including career-best figures of 4/72.

Gill was also associated with Punjab Kings, then known as Kings XI Punjab, during the early years of the Indian Premier League. Although he did not become a regular in the playing XI, he remained part of the franchise setup and trained alongside several top Indian and overseas cricketers.

Following the news of his death, Virat Kohli paid tribute to his former teammate on social media.

“Shocked and saddened to hear about Amanpreet Gill’s passing. Sending prayers and strength to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace. Om Shanti,” Kohli wrote.

Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh also expressed grief over Gill’s passing.

“Deeply saddened to hear about Amanpreet Singh Gill’s passing. Shared the dressing room in our early days, he was a quiet, hardworking cricketer who loved the game. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace. Om Shanti,” Yuvraj posted on X.

PBKS players also wore black armbands during their IPL 2026 clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad as a mark of respect following Gill’s death.
