After a well-received precursor show in July at the Triveni Kala Sangam in New Delhi, an exhibition on Mahatma Gandhi curated by Gargi Seth is representing the India Pavilion at the fourth Jerusalem Biennale.

Inspired by Gandhi's autobiography "The Story of My Experiments With Truth", the India Pavilion brings together the Father of the Nation's experiments with truth of the most elemental nature, expressed through contemporary Indian art.

The participating artists include Satish Gujral, Anjolie Ela Menon, Asit Patnaik, Arpana Caur, Biman B. Das, Rajendra Patil, Ravindra Salve, Rini Dhumal, Niren Sengupta, Siddharth, Seema Kohli, Ambalika Chitkara, Neeraj Gupta, Kota Neelima, Avijit Roy, Shruti Chandra and Vasundhara Tewari.

"This Biennale is a look into a different part of the world and I believe it gives Indian art an audience in a different part of the world. Europe has enjoyed a sort of a longish hegemony and for far too long art from other parts of the world have been considered a poor cousin," Seth had told in an interview earlier.

The Jerusalem Biennale pavilion, however, is "not so much about seeking to depict Gandhi's ideals, it is rather a take-off point for the artists' creativity here".

Since the theme for the 2019 Jerusalem Biennale is 'LeShem Shamayim' (For Heaven's Sake), the India pavilion interweaves Gandhi, his experiments with and his search for the ultimate truth. "In my opinion, religion is the man's most elemental and eternal search for, and relationship with the ultimate truth," said Seth.

The exhibition, supported by Lalit Kala Akademi, continues till November 28 at the Menachem Begin Heritage Center at Jerusalem.
