Imitiaz Ali's Aaj Kal is one of the most eagerly awaited flicks of 2020 as the film brings together  the magical pair of Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan on screen for the first time. Meanwhile, the filmmaker has already decided on his next project which is based on the life of popular Punjabi folk singer the late Amar Singh Chamkila. The singer who is often referred to as the Elvis of Punjab Chamkila is regarded as one of the best stage performers of Punjab. Amar Singh Chamkila's tracks often addressed extra-martial relationships, drug abuse, and the patriarchal mindset of the Punjabi men. The songs although gave him instant fame but also made him a controversial figure in the music industry.

As per a report by Mid-Day, Imitiaz has acquired the filming rights of the biopic and have got the necessary permissions from the singer's family for the film, and the scripting is also underway, but filmmakers are still undecided on the male lead. Ayushmann Khurrana and Kartik Aaryan are tipped as frontrunners for the role but nothing has been decided yet. It is believed that the ace filmmaker will start working on the project once he is finish shooting his recent romantic flick with Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan.
