AFC condoles P.K. Banerjee's demise

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) on Friday condoled the death of legendary Indian footballer P.K. Banerjee.

New Delhi, March 20 The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) on Friday condoled the death of legendary Indian footballer P.K. Banerjee.

"We at AFC condole the passing of former Indian captain, coach and technical director Mr Pradip Kumar Banerjee," the AFC said in a tweet.

Banerjee died at a city hospital after battling a chest infection for a long time. He was 83.

A two-time Olympian and the only surviving goal-scorer of India's 1962 Asian Games gold medal winning team, Banerjee, the Asian Games gold medallist, was suffering from sepsis and multi-organ failure due to pneumonia on a background of Parkinson's disease, dementia and heart ailments.

Banerjee, who was on life support at a hospital here since March 2, breathed his last at 12.40 p.m.

He is survived by daughters Paula and Purna and younger brother Prasun Banerjee, a former India captain.
