Austria: Cops Arrest 39-Year-Old Man After Rat Poison Found in Baby Food Jars in Three Countries

Austrian police have arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with a disturbing baby food contamination case involving jars tainted with rat poison. The investigation began two weeks ago after a jar of carrot and potato purée was discovered to contain poisonous substances in Burgenland, eastern Austria. Following the discovery, German baby food manufacturer HiPP initiated a large-scale recall of an entire product line as a precautionary measure. Authorities later recovered five contaminated jars from Austria, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia before they reached consumers. Officials believe the incident may have been part of an extortion attempt targeting the company with serious threats to public safety.

According to reports, the suspect allegedly attempted to extort €2 million from HiPP through a threatening email sent on March 27. However, the company reportedly failed to notice the message until after the deadline had passed because the email account was checked only every few weeks. Austrian police announced the arrest on Saturday but declined to reveal further information due to the ongoing investigation. Officials warned that at least one contaminated jar may still be circulating in the market. Consumers were advised to inspect jars carefully for damaged lids, missing safety seals, unusual odours, or suspicious white stickers with red circles on the bottom.

Health officials have urged parents to remain alert and seek immediate medical attention if children who consumed the baby food display symptoms such as bleeding, severe weakness, or unusual paleness. The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety issued detailed warnings as authorities continue efforts to locate any remaining contaminated products. Police spokesman Helmut Marban confirmed the investigation remains active and said no additional details regarding the suspect or arrest circumstances could currently be disclosed. The incident has raised serious concerns across Europe regarding food safety, product tampering, and the vulnerability of consumer goods to criminal extortion attempts targeting major manufacturers.
