Greece Biscuit Factory Fire: 5 Women Killed, 7 Others Injured in Blaze at Violanta Cookie Plant in Trikala

At least five female workers were killed and seven others were injured after the blast the led fire at the Violanta biscuit factory in Trikala, Greece, about 320km north of Athens. The incident occurred during the night shift.

After receiving the information, firefighters and rescue crews reached spot and found five female workers bodies and shifted injured people to nearby hospital. The blaze gutted the whole plant. Parts of a fifth female body were later recovered, and were to be formally identified using DNA tests, said fire officer.

"Unfortunately, the day began in the shadow of the tragic accident in Trikala, at a modern food production facility," Greece Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Violanta, a locally-based business, has national distribution for a range of products, including wholewheat cookies, chocolate‑sandwich biscuits and cereal bars.

As per the initial investigation by the police, the blaze may have occurred near the ovens, which operate around the clock. Six workers and one firefighter were being treated at a hospital in Trikala, none in serious condition.
