Bishkek, Jan 12 Kazakhstan's Central Election Commission (CEC) on Tuesday announced that the ruling Nur Otan party grabbed 71.09 per cent of votes and 76 seats in the parliamentary elections held two days ago.

The Ak Zhol Democratic Party and the People's Party of Kazakhstan secured 12 and 10 seats in the Majilis, the lower house of Parliament, winning 10.95 per cent and 9.1 per cent of the votes, respectively, Xinhua new agency reported.

Meanwhile, the Auyl Party and the Adal Party, however, did not pass the 7 per cent threshold to enter Parliament.

According to the CEC, a total of 7.5 million out of 11.9 million voters cast their ballots on Sunday, with the voter turnout at 63 per cent.

The lower house consists of 107 deputies who serve a five-year term.

Among them, 98 were elected directly from party lists during Sunday's election, while the remaining nine were elected on Monday by the Assembly of People of Kazakhstan, an advisory body representing the country's major ethnic groups.

Kazakhstan amended its legislation in 2020 by allocating a mandatory 30 per cent quota for women and young people in the Majilis to encourage their participation in politics.

The Kazakh Parliament consists of two chambers: the upper Senate and the lower Majilis.
