Islamabad, Jan 19 The Pakistan Army has recovered the body of an American climber near K2, the second highest peak of the world, making the second death of a foreign mountaineer in the area in less than a week, the media reported on Tuesday.

A helicopter team spotted Alex Goldfarb-Rumyantzev's remains during a search and rescue operation that began on Sunday, Geo News quoted the Alpine Club of Pakistan as saying.

He appeared to have fallen off the mountain, Hungarian expedition company Magyar Expedicios, which was supporting the climbers, said in a statement.

Goldfarb and Hungarian Zoltan Szlanko were planning to climb the 8,047 metre high Broad Peak, which is yet to be ascended in winter, without the use of oxygen or any porters for help, according to Magyar Expedicios.

To acclimate for that climb, the pair set out to summit the nearby Pastore Peak, 6,209 metres high, but were met with harsh winter conditions and Szlanko decided to turn back, while Goldfarb continued alone.

On January 16, Spanish climber Sergio Mingote fell to his death in the Karakoram mountains while attempting to make his way down to Base Camp on K2.

The K2 is located on the China–Pakistan border between in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of northern Pakistan, and Dafdar Township in Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County of Xinjiang, China.

It is the highest point of the Karakoram mountain range and the highest point in both Pakistan and Xinjiang.
