Colombo, July 17 Sri Lanka is scheduled to provide e-passports to its citizens effective from January 2025, a statement from the country's Department of Immigration and Emigration said on Wednesday.

The department said a new methodology for applying for passports will be executed accordingly.

Accordingly, prior registration is required for applying for Sri Lankan passports with effect from July 16 and the new methodology will commence from July 19 for applicants registered on July 16, the department said, according to Xinhua news agency.

The department said subsequent to registration, the opportunity to obtain new passports will be received on a priority basis.

Earlier, the department introduced the online passport application platform to remove the need for those living out of Colombo to travel to the Colombo head office for passport application or renewal.

A large number of Sri Lankans, seeking foreign jobs, have been applying for new passports since the economic crisis of 2022.
