The Maratha ruler was born near Junnar in the Pune District of Maharashtra to Shahaji Bhosale and Jijabai. However, historians debate his birth date. Some say he was born on February 19, 1630, while others claim his birthdate was April 6, 1627. The Maharashtra government officially recognises February 19 as Shiv Jayanti. Today's celebration is based on the Julian calendar rather than the widely used Gregorian calendar.
The alternative date aligns with April 16, 1627, in the Gregorian calendar. When converted to the Hindu lunar calendar, it corresponds to Dwitiya, Vaishakha, Shukla Paksha, and Vikram Samvat 1684, as per Drik Panchang. On the other hand, the more widely accepted date — February 19, 1630—corresponds to Krishna Paksha Tritiya in the Phalguna month when converted to the Hindu lunar calendar followed in Maharashtra.
