Struggling to Lose Weight Despite Walking? Here’s What You’re Doing Wrong

Walking has many benefits , but some people complaint that despite walking daily, they are unable to reduce their belly fat. However, many individuals make mistakes while walking for exercise, which prevents them from achieving the desired results. According to Dr. Chau Thi Anh, Head of the Nutrition Department at Nguyen Tri Phuong General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, walking is an excellent habit for promoting both heart and joint health. However, walking alone is not sufficient to shed excess body fat. Weight loss is facilitated only when regular exercise is combined with a conscious effort to monitor one's caloric intake.

Doctors explain that walking for one hour allows you to burn only 200 to 300 calories. This is roughly equivalent to the caloric content of a single bowl of rice or a small pastry. Many people harbor the misconception that since they have exercised, it is acceptable to eat more than usual. It is this very misconception that hinders weight loss. Therefore, one should pay close attention to the Glycemic Index of the foods consumed. Priority should be given to foods—such as whole grains and vegetables that contain slow-digesting carbohydrates, as these help keep insulin levels under control.

While daily walking is excellent for your mental health, it is not, in itself, sufficient for weight loss. Foods high in fat should be consumed in moderation. It is essential to maintain proper portion control in your daily diet. To effectively reduce overall body weight or belly fat, one must walk at a brisk pace. As we age, our metabolic rate naturally slows down. Furthermore, walking alone does not lead to any significant changes in muscle mass. Some individuals focus exclusively on cardio exercises—such as walking—while neglecting other forms of physical activity, such as strength training. Therefore, it is crucial to incorporate a variety of exercises into your daily routine. Weight loss also depends on hormones.

To achieve weight loss, there must be a proper balance between the calories consumed and the calories burned. A lack of sleep or prolonged stress can lead to elevated cortisol levels, which significantly increases the likelihood of fat accumulation in the body—particularly around the abdominal area.
