The birth anniversary of Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, which is widely celebrated across Maharashtra, is approaching. As every year, the discussion has begun among devotees about which is the correct date for observing Shiv Jayanti. The government recognised February 19 as the official date, while many followers mark the occasion according to the Hindu calendar, which places it on a different day.

The Maharashtra government has adopted February 19  as the official birth date of Shivaji Maharaj, based on research conducted by a committee of historians and experts. The date corresponds to February 19, 1630. It is a public holiday in the state, and celebrations are held at the government and community levels.

According to the Hindu calendar, Shivaji Maharaj was born on Tritiya of the month of Falgun in Shalivahan Shaka 1551. In 2026, this tithi falls on March 6. Many traditional groups and devotees prefer to observe Shiv Jayanti on this date.

Shiv Jayanti 2026 officially falls on Thursday, February 19. Many devotees are planning visits to historic sites such as Shivneri Fort, Raigad Fort and Pratapgad Fort, taking advantage of consecutive holidays. Cultural programmes are expected across the state for about two weeks, continuing until the tithi-based celebration on March 6.
