Tamil New Year 2026: Ambigai Muthumariamman Temple in Kattoor Decorated with Currency, Gold Ornaments (Watch)

On the occasion of Tamil New Year, Ambigai Muthumariamman temple in Coimbatore's Kattoor was decorated with currency notes and gold ornaments. Tamil New Year, also known as Puthandu or Varusappirappu, is celebrated at the beginning of the year by Tamils. 

Not just in India, but countries including Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Mauritius and Reunion celebrate the festival on April 15. On this day, devotees believe Lord Indra descended on the earth to offer peace.

"On the auspicious day of the Tamil New Year, we are gathered at the Ambigai Muthumariamman Temple. The Lord has been decorated with currency notes and gems.... Let us all come together and pray for the blessings of the Lord," a devotee told the news agency ANI

On the Tamil New Year, Tamilians buy gold, which symbolises prosperity and luck. Families and friends often exchange gold items as gifts and wear them during the festival. The precious yellow metal is gifted in the form of coins, biscuits, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and other jewellery as they symbolise a prosperous future.
