Baramati Bypoll: Sunetra Pawar, 22 Others in Fray as Voting Set for Tomorrow

After a series of major political developments over the past three months, Baramati is set to vote on Thursday, April 23, following the demise of former Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. The high-profile by-election has largely evolved into a one-sided contest, with officials confirming that all arrangements have been completed and robust security measures put in place. Authorities stated on Wednesday that the constituency is fully prepared for polling, and the election machinery is functioning efficiently. With minimal political competition, the focus now shifts to voter turnout as Baramati prepares to witness a crucial yet predictable electoral exercise.

1. Polling Date and Election Readiness
The by-election for the 201-Baramati Assembly constituency will be conducted on April 23, with election authorities asserting full readiness after a comprehensive review meeting held at the Pune District Collector’s office on April 21. Officials confirmed that polling stations have been finalised, voting materials distributed, transport logistics arranged, and security protocols strengthened. Senior election observers and district-level officers expressed confidence in the arrangements. They stated that every aspect, including manpower deployment and coordination between departments, has been meticulously planned to ensure that the voting process is conducted smoothly, efficiently, and without any disruption across the constituency.

2. Officials Review Preparations
Key election observers, including General Observer Bidya Nand Singh, Police Observer N. Kolanchi, and Expenditure Observer Banoth Akhil Ram Naik, assessed the preparedness during the review process. Pune District Collector and Election Officer Jitendra Dudi affirmed that all necessary systems are in place to facilitate peaceful polling. Meanwhile, Pune Rural Police have intensified security arrangements throughout the constituency. Superintendent of Police Sandeep Singh Gill confirmed that preventive actions such as executing non-bailable warrants, collecting licensed firearms, and deploying special teams have been completed. 3. No Sensitive Polling Stations Identified
Authorities have clarified that no polling station in the constituency has been classified as sensitive, reflecting confidence in the law and order situation. Election teams have been instructed to strictly adhere to Election Commission guidelines, respond promptly to complaints, and maintain complete transparency during the voting process. The by-election has been necessitated by the sudden demise of veteran leader Ajit Pawar in a plane crash earlier this year, creating an unusual political scenario. Election authorities have also completed the second phase of randomisation for Electronic Voting Machines and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail units in the presence of candidates and their representatives at the Baramati Sub-Divisional Office. Officials mentioned that the number of machines and polling arrangements are similar to those implemented during the November 2024 elections, ensuring consistency and familiarity in the process for both officials and voters across the constituency.

To enhance voter awareness and transparency, the Election Commission has introduced the ECINet platform, enabling citizens to access detailed information about candidates, including their criminal background, financial assets, educational qualifications, and submitted affidavits.
