COVID-19: Mumbai's air quality improves amid lockdown

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on Indians to observe social distancing on Sunday, roads that are usually crammed with cars, rickshaws, motorbikes and buses were clear. 

The lockdown to help control the spread of the coronavirus had an immediate positive effect on air quality in Mumbai.

According to data released by System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR), the restriction in vehicular traffic due to Janata Curfew has played a significant role in improving the air quality in most big cities in the country, including Mumbai.

On Monday, New Delhi's Air Quality Index was recorded at around 93, which is considered moderate. Air quality is deemed to be good when the number drops below 50.
