Maharashtra To Implement ‘One Nation, One E-Challan’ System Statewide To Boost Traffic Enforcement

The Maharashtra government, on April 28, approved the statewide implementation of the ‘One Nation, One E-Challan’ project to strengthen digital traffic enforcement and streamline the collection of penalties from violators. Earlier, the initiative had been launched in selected major cities such as Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur during its first phase. According to a Government Resolution (GR), the project has now received administrative approval for expansion across Maharashtra. Officials stated that the technology-based system is expected to improve transparency and ensure uniform traffic enforcement procedures in different regions of the state while helping authorities manage violations more efficiently.

As per the GR, the estimated cost of implementing the project throughout Maharashtra has been pegged at nearly ₹19.35 crore. The decision to extend the initiative statewide was taken during a meeting of a high-powered committee chaired by the Additional Chief Secretary (Home) on April 13. The government has assigned the Additional Director General (Traffic) the responsibility of overseeing and supervising the implementation process. Authorities believe the project will create a centralized mechanism for issuing and monitoring traffic challans, making the process faster and more organized for both enforcement agencies and vehicle owners across urban and rural areas.

Officials said the project has been approved in response to the rapidly increasing number of vehicles on roads, which has contributed to rising traffic congestion and related management issues. Traffic police departments have also been facing difficulties in recovering fines from motorists who violate rules, especially when vehicles move across different jurisdictions. The statewide e-challan system is expected to help authorities track offences more effectively and improve compliance among drivers. The government hopes the initiative will strengthen road discipline, reduce delays in fine recovery and support smoother traffic management operations throughout Maharashtra.
