Maharashtra Weather Update: Heatwave Grips Several Districts as Rain, Thunderstorms Expected in Parts of State
Maharashtra is witnessing contrasting weather conditions on May 18, with several districts battling intense summer heat while others are likely to receive unseasonal rainfall and thunderstorms. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple weather alerts across the state as temperatures continue to soar in some regions even as rain activity develops in others. Mumbai and parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region are expected to remain hot and humid throughout the day. According to the IMD, the city recorded a temperature of 30 degrees Celsius at 10:30 IST, while humidity levels hovered around 79 per cent, making outdoor conditions uncomfortable for residents.
The weather department has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad districts due to prevailing hot and humid conditions. Officials have advised people to remain hydrated and avoid direct exposure to the sun between 12 noon and 4 pm, especially as heatwave-like conditions may continue in isolated areas. Temperatures in Mumbai are expected to range between 27 degrees Celsius and 35 degrees Celsius on Sunday, while partly cloudy skies are likely over the next 48 hours.
Meanwhile, several districts across Maharashtra are expected to witness light to moderate rainfall and thundershowers. Rain activity has been forecast for Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Pune, Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur, Solapur, Jalna, Beed and Nanded. Cloudy conditions are also expected in isolated pockets of these regions. The IMD has additionally issued a yellow alert for Latur and Dharashiv districts, warning residents about thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, moderate rainfall and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour at isolated places.
Even as rain is expected in some parts of the state, severe heat conditions continue to affect several districts in Vidarbha and Marathwada. Heatwave-like weather is likely to persist in Parbhani, Hingoli, Akola, Amravati, Chandrapur, Nagpur and Wardha districts over the coming days. Jalgaon remains among the hottest regions in Maharashtra, with temperatures consistently staying above 45 degrees Celsius in recent days. Earlier this week, the district recorded a scorching 45.6 degrees Celsius, highlighting the intense heatwave conditions prevailing in parts of the state. The IMD has urged residents across Maharashtra to remain cautious amid the fluctuating weather pattern, as the state continues to experience a mix of extreme heat, humidity and unseasonal rainfall activity.
