Maharashtra Weather Update: IMD Predicts Thunderstorms, Rain and Heatwave Conditions Across State Today

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms, gusty winds and light to moderate rainfall in several parts of Maharashtra over the next five days, while heatwave conditions are expected to continue in parts of North Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Mumbai, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and winds reaching 40 to 50 kmph are likely at isolated places in South Konkan-Goa, South Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada. North Madhya Maharashtra is expected to witness thunderstorms with winds of 30 to 40 kmph.

Districts including Pune, Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Nanded, Latur and Dharashiv are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms and gusty winds on May 16 and May 17. Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg are also expected to witness moderate rainfall and thunderstorm activity during this period.

The IMD has issued a heatwave warning for isolated pockets of Jalgaon, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Parbhani, Hingoli, Akola, Amaravati, Wardha and Nagpur. Jalgaon recorded the highest temperature in the region at 45.3 degrees Celsius on Thursday.

Hot and humid conditions are likely to prevail in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad and other parts of Konkan-Goa over the next two days. However, light rain and thundershowers are expected in parts of Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra from May 18 onwards.

The weather department said rainfall activity was reported at isolated places in South Konkan-Goa, South Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada on Friday, while dry weather prevailed in most other regions.

The IMD has warned that heavy rainfall and thunderstorms could lead to localised flooding in low-lying areas, traffic disruption, damage to weak structures and standing crops, and temporary disruption of power supply. People have been advised to avoid open fields and shelter under trees during thunderstorms.

According to the IMD, favourable weather conditions could lead to the monsoon reaching the Kerala coast as early as May 26, 2026, ahead of its normal onset date of June 1. Cloud cover has strengthened over the southern Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea, and the monsoon is expected to officially enter the Andaman and Nicobar Islands within the next 24 hours.

Farmers have been advised to complete harvesting of mature crops, avoid irrigation and chemical spraying, and ensure proper storage of harvested produce to prevent damage from unseasonal rain. Meanwhile, fishermen have been warned against venturing into parts of the Arabian Sea near Kerala, Karnataka and adjoining coasts due to squally weather and strong winds reaching up to 65 kmph.

Mumbai Weather Update

For Mumbai city and suburbs, the IMD has forecast mainly clear to partly cloudy skies over the next 48 hours, with hot and humid conditions likely at isolated places. Maximum temperatures are expected to remain around 35 degrees Celsius, while minimum temperatures are likely to hover between 26 and 27 degrees Celsius.
