Mumbai and the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region began the day under clear skies on May 14, but intense summer heat continued to trouble residents across the city and nearby districts. The temperature in Mumbai touched nearly 31 degrees Celsius by 8.30 am, making for an unusually warm morning. According to weather forecasts, Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai are likely to witness bright sunshine throughout the day, with maximum temperatures expected between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius. Despite the rising heat, the city’s air quality remained satisfactory during the morning hours, offering some relief to citizens dealing with the sweltering weather conditions across the region.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad districts for May 15, warning of heatwave conditions in isolated pockets. Officials stated that Thane and Raigad are likely to continue facing heatwave conditions on May 16 as well. Residents have been advised to avoid stepping outdoors during the hottest afternoon hours and remain alert for symptoms related to heat stress. Authorities warned that prolonged exposure to high temperatures may lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, dizziness, and other heat-related illnesses, particularly among senior citizens, children, and people working outdoors for extended durations under direct sunlight.

Health experts and civic officials have urged people to stay hydrated and avoid consuming alcohol or excessive caffeinated beverages, as these may increase dehydration risks. Citizens have been encouraged to drink coconut water, buttermilk, and electrolyte-rich fluids to maintain hydration levels during the heatwave period. Authorities also advised residents to wear loose, light-coloured clothing and consume fresh fruits, salads, and light meals instead of oily or spicy foods. Meanwhile, Mumbai’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) remained in the ‘good’ category with a reading of 32. The cleanest air was recorded at Mulgaon Station 2 in Saththharatha Nagara, Shiv Sagar Estate with AQI 18, while Mirashi Nagar reported the poorest air quality with AQI 127.

Apart from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, several districts across Maharashtra are also expected to face severe weather conditions this week. The RMC stated that isolated pockets of Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada are likely to experience heatwave conditions on May 14, along with unusually warm nights in certain areas. Districts including Jalgaon, Nashik, Ahilyanagar, Pune, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Jalna, Parbhani, Hingoli, Beed, Nanded, Akola, Amravati, and Wardha may witness soaring temperatures. At the same time, parts of South Madhya Maharashtra and coastal Konkan are expected to receive thunderstorms, lightning activity, light to moderate rainfall, and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kmph.
