The price of onions in the markets of Nashik continued to soar, creating severe distress for the consumers. "The rise in onion prices is temporary. It is the result of the heavy crop damage that farmers have suffered due to rainfall this year," said a seller from wholesale vegetable market in Nashik.

Meanwhile onion prices continue to surge in market of Shivamogga, Karnataka. "Excess rains have damaged onion produce so we are getting it from Maharashtra. This has inflated prices. Today wholesale price is around Rs. 70-80 & retail price is Rs 80-90," said another seller.

Central Government on Friday imposed stock holding limit on onion traders to check prices. A notification has been issued in this regard. Stock limit for wholesaler is 25 metric tons and for retailers it is 2 metric tons, said Leena Nandan, Secretary, Consumer Affairs Department.

Onion prices surged in the state after crops were damaged due to rainfall in various parts of the country following which consumers are forced to buy onions in less quantity.
