Mumbai: Bandra East Skywalk Reopens, Bringing Huge Relief to BKC Commuters During Peak Hours

Mumbai’s daily commute just became significantly smoother. The reconstructed skywalk connecting Bandra Railway Station (East) to Kalanagar Junction on the Western Express Highway has now been opened for public use, offering a safer and more seamless walking route for thousands of pedestrians.

The newly rebuilt structure directly connects to the foot over bridge at Bandra Railway Station (East), allowing commuters to transition from train platforms straight onto the elevated walkway without stepping into chaotic road traffic. For regular office-goers, especially those travelling to Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), the development comes as a major relief.

Stretching 680 metres in length and measuring an average width of 5.40 metres, the skywalk has been designed to handle heavy pedestrian flow. The wider passage helps reduce bottlenecks and ensures smoother movement, particularly during peak office hours.

The impact is expected to be most visible between 6 pm and 9 pm, when thousands of employees head home from BKC, Bandra Court, MHADA offices and the District Collector’s office. Earlier, commuters had to navigate through dense traffic and risky crossings along the Western Express Highway. The elevated pathway now enables pedestrians to cross safely, significantly lowering the risk of accidents in one of Mumbai’s busiest stretches.

To enhance safety and security, a total of 14 CCTV cameras have been installed along the skywalk, enabling round-the-clock monitoring. Two escalators have also been added to ease vertical movement, particularly benefiting senior citizens, children and daily commuters carrying office bags.

With improved connectivity, better safety measures and reduced travel stress, the reopening of the Bandra East skywalk marks a welcome upgrade to Mumbai’s pedestrian infrastructure. For regular BKC commuters, especially those navigating the evening rush, the new skywalk offers not just convenience but a much-needed daily respite
