Mumbai: Former Mayor Kishori Pednekar Elected as Leader of Shiv Sena UBT Corporators

Former Mayor and corporator Kishori Pednekar has been elected as the leader of Shiv Sena (UBT) corporators. In a meeting held by Uddhav Thackeray’s faction of Shiv Sena, Pednekar was formally appointed as the leader. She had won the Mumbai Municipal Corporation election from Ward No. 199, defeating Rupal Kusale of the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction). This appointment strengthens the Thackeray faction’s leadership in the municipal body despite the recent electoral setback.

In India’s wealthiest municipal corporation, where Thackeray’s Shiv Sena held uninterrupted power for 25 years, the BJP-led alliance overturned their dominance in the 2026 elections. The BJP emerged as the single largest party with 89 seats in Mumbai, followed by Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) with 65 seats. Shinde’s Shiv Sena won 29 seats, Congress 24, MNS 6, MIM 8, Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction 3, Sharad Pawar’s NCP faction 1, and the Samajwadi Party 2 seats, making for a highly fragmented corporation.

The reservation for the Mayor’s post across all 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra will be announced on January 22. At 11 a.m., the Municipal Development Department will release the reservation list in the Secretariat, determining which category’s candidate will be eligible to contest for Mayor in each corporation. This step will finalise the framework for selecting Mayors in the state’s urban bodies.
