Mumbai: Labourer Dies, Another Injured After Falling From Fifth Floor Of Under-Construction Building In Mazgaon
A labourer lost his life while another sustained serious injuries after both fell from the fifth floor of an under-construction building in Mazgaon area.
According to police, the injured victim, 21-year-old Habib Sulu Shah, a resident of West Bengal, stated that he had been working as a labourer at the Alamdar Building located in Mufaddal Park area for the past one year.
On the day of the incident, Habib was working on the fifth-floor terrace along with his 32-year-old co-worker Pranab Luthu Mal. During the work, the slab mesh allegedly shifted suddenly, causing both workers to lose balance and fall directly onto the fourth floor.
Following the accident, both were rushed to Sir J.J. Hospital for treatment, where doctors declared Pranab dead after examination. Habib Shah is currently undergoing treatment and suffered serious injuries to his waist, hands and legs.
The injured worker alleged that despite carrying out work at a height, site supervisor Zuber Yasin Malpekar and construction manager Farukh Latif Thim failed to provide safety belts or other mandatory protective equipment.
The victim alleged that the fatal accident occurred due to criminal negligence and failure to follow workplace safety standards.
Based on Habib Shah’s statement, Byculla Police have registered a case against the contractor and construction manager under Sections 106(1), 125(1) and 125(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for negligence at the workplace and violation of safety norms. Further legal investigation is underway.
