Mumbai’s suburban railway network marked a significant milestone on Tuesday as the iconic ‘Ladies Special’ local train completed 34 successful years of service, continuing its legacy of making daily travel safer and more comfortable for women commuters. The country’s first women-exclusive suburban train began operations on May 5, 1992, on the Western Railway route, creating history in Mumbai’s public transport system. To celebrate the occasion, women ticket examiners welcomed female passengers with flowers, adding a festive touch to the journey. The initiative highlighted the importance of the service, which has remained a dependable travel option for thousands of working women commuting across the city every day.

During the 1990s, Mumbai witnessed rapid industrial and commercial expansion, particularly in the southern business districts, leading to a sharp increase in the number of women travelling from suburban areas for work. Recognising the growing demand for safer and more convenient transport, Western Railway introduced the Ladies Special service between Churchgate and Borivali. The train quickly gained popularity among commuters due to its comfort and security. Encouraged by the overwhelming response, authorities extended the route to Virar in 1993, allowing more women from distant suburbs to benefit from the service. Over the decades, the train has become an essential part of Mumbai’s lifeline.

Western Railway currently operates 10 Ladies Special trains daily, catering exclusively to women passengers across various suburban routes. Beyond easing travel, the service has also evolved into a unique social space where women interact, build friendships, and support one another during their daily commute. Many regular passengers say the train has fostered a strong sense of community over the years. For several women, especially those travelling during peak hours for medical appointments or urgent work commitments, the Ladies Special offers a much-needed sense of security. Boarding crowded general compartments can often be difficult and stressful, but these dedicated services ensure a safer and more comfortable travel experience for female commuters.
