Mumbai Local Train News: Virar Station Ready for 15-Coach Trains; Capacity to Rise by 25% After Successful Trial Run

The suburban rail network in Mumbai is set for a significant upgrade as Virar station prepares to handle longer trains following a successful trial run conducted on Sunday. This development is expected to increase passenger capacity by nearly 25 percent per trip on the busy Virar-Dahanu route. According to railway officials, Western Railway is planning to introduce multiple 15-coach services across key routes, marking a major step toward easing congestion. Authorities indicated that this move is only the beginning, with larger capacity enhancements expected in the near future as infrastructure and operations continue to evolve.

  1. 15-coach rollout: What’s changing
Western Railway is set to upgrade around 17 suburban services to 15-coach trains, marking a notable operational shift. Of these, eight services will run between Virar and Dahanu for the first time, while nine services will operate between Churchgate and Virar. To support this expansion, two newly built 15-coach trains were delivered to the Virar carshed over the weekend. Officials stated that this marks the first-ever introduction of such long suburban trains on the Virar-Dahanu section, significantly enhancing capacity and offering a more comfortable travel experience for commuters along this rapidly growing corridor.

  2. Big shift coming: Freight trains to move out
Railway authorities indicated that a major transformation is expected once the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor becomes fully operational. Officials explained that nearly 30 freight trains running daily on the suburban line are likely to be diverted to this corridor. This shift will free up vital track space, enabling the introduction of more suburban train services on the same route. Authorities described this development as a potential turning point for the northern suburban network, as it would allow better scheduling, increased frequency, and improved overall efficiency for passenger services.

  3. What’s been upgraded at Virar
Significant infrastructure upgrades have been completed at Virar station to accommodate longer trains and improve passenger flow. Platforms 3A and 4A have been widened from 6.5 metres to 10.5 metres, while all relevant platforms have been extended to support 15-coach trains instead of the earlier 12-coach limit. Additionally, a new Platform 5A has been constructed on the western side to handle increased traffic. An official stated in indirect speech that the entire project was completed within a record four months despite operational challenges at one of the busiest stations on the network.

  4. Trial run cleared
A trial run of a 15-coach Electric Multiple Unit was successfully carried out on Sunday by Western Railway in coordination with the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation. Officials mentioned in indirect speech that the upgraded platforms would soon be handed over to the zonal railway authorities for the commencement of regular services. They further noted that these developments are expected to significantly boost carrying capacity, enhance passenger convenience, and effectively address the rising demand on this heavily used suburban route.

  5. Voices from the ground
Commuter representatives welcomed the move, highlighting its long-term benefits. Advocate Prathamesh Prabhutendolkar, associated with a passenger welfare group, stated in indirect speech that the Dahanu-Virar section would finally receive its first 15-coach suburban service, which had been awaited for years. He added that this step would help ease overcrowding and improve travel conditions for thousands of daily passengers. Meanwhile, passenger activist Himanshu Vartak remarked in indirect speech that although such services were expected earlier, their introduction would still play a crucial role in reducing congestion, especially during peak hours.

  6. Why this matters
The introduction of 15-coach trains is expected to bring multiple benefits to commuters and the railway network. Each train will be able to carry approximately 25 per cent more passengers, reducing overcrowding on one of the fastest-growing suburban corridors. The upgrade will also improve peak-hour distribution and provide better travel conditions. Officials indicated that once freight operations are shifted to dedicated corridors, there will be further scope to increase the number of suburban services, paving the way for a more efficient and commuter-friendly rail network in the region.
