Mumbai’s monorail system, which has remained shut for the past several months, is now likely to resume operations soon. A crucial safety inspection required before restarting the corridor is scheduled to take place next week. Officials believe the monorail could return to service by the end of this month if the remaining formalities are completed on time. The 20-kilometre-long monorail corridor, consisting of 17 stations, was suspended indefinitely on September 20, 2026, after repeated technical failures and operational disruptions. Since then, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has replaced the outdated systems and completed major infrastructure upgrades across the route.

Before reopening the service, MMRDA has initiated the final phase of inspections and certification procedures. Retired Metro Railway Safety Commissioner Padam Singh Baghel has been appointed to conduct the last safety evaluation of the corridor. Once the final CMRS certification is issued, monorail services between Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk and Chembur are expected to restart. Authorities stated that all preliminary checks have already been completed and only the final approval remains pending. Officials are hopeful that the monorail will soon return to public service after remaining non-operational for an extended period due to technical concerns and modernization work carried out across the entire network.

Meanwhile, MMRDA has also appointed a private contractor to manage the operation and maintenance of the monorail system for the next five years. The contract has been awarded to Power Mech Projects Company. Under the agreement, the contractor will oversee daily train operations, station management, depot handling, and repair and maintenance activities. In a major boost to the network, 10 new monorail trains have also been added to the fleet. Their trial runs and testing processes have already been completed successfully. Additionally, internationally reputed inspection agency Bureau Veritas has finished an independent safety assessment and granted the required ISA safety certification for the upgraded system.

At present, only the final safety clearance is awaited before the monorail can officially resume passenger operations. Once the green signal is granted following the upcoming inspection, the service will once again be opened to commuters. Authorities believe the upgraded systems, new trains, and improved maintenance arrangements will help ensure smoother and safer operations in the future. The reopening is expected to provide relief to thousands of daily passengers who depend on public transport connectivity between central and eastern Mumbai. With all major technical and administrative work now completed, the city’s monorail network appears set for a long-awaited comeback later this month.
