Mumbai: Two BMC Employees Held For Taking Rs 10,000 Bribe From Sanitation Worker in Andheri

Another case of alleged corruption has surfaced within the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. Two employees from the K-South ward in Andheri East were caught red-handed while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000. The incident has created a stir within municipal circles. According to officials, the accused had allegedly demanded money from a sanitation worker in exchange for processing official orders related to permanent employment status. The Anti-Corruption Bureau carried out the operation after receiving a formal complaint from the worker, reported NDTV Marathi.

The complainant in the case works as a sanitation employee and has been seeking confirmation of permanent service status. The accused officials allegedly demanded money to issue the required orders and reportedly continued pressuring the worker for payment. Those arrested officials have been identified as Yogesh Sawant, serving as the in-charge assistant chief supervisor in the Solid Waste Management Department of the K-South ward, and Sushant Gamre, a worker in the same department. Investigators said the officials had initially sought Rs 15,000 as a bribe before settling for Rs 10,000 after negotiations with the complainant, reported NDTV Marathi.

Following the complaint, the Anti-Corruption Bureau laid a trap and caught both accused while allegedly accepting the bribe amount. Officials confirmed that the accused were taken into custody immediately after the transaction. Authorities have now initiated the process of registering a case against them under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The bureau is continuing its investigation to determine whether more officials were involved or if similar demands had been made in other cases. The incident has once again raised concerns over alleged corruption in civic departments and the difficulties faced by contractual workers seeking permanent employment.
