Mucormycosis leading to more deaths than Covid

Covid pandemic is diminishing but a new crisis in the form of mucormycosis has been on the rise in district.

In the district, 960 patients were found with mucormycosis or black fungus. Out of these, 77 patients died. The shocking fact is that while 1.87 per cent died due to Covid, 7.94 per cent died due to mucormycosis while the rate of recovery of patients is only 48.81 per cent, which speaks volumes about the fatality.

The health department has already issued a warning regarding this disease. The disease can only be dealt with proper health management and treatment. There is a strong possibility of spreading this disease among people with diabetes or the ones who have contracted diabetes during Covid.

According to the health department, 27 new patients were found in Nagpur district on Friday. The total number of patients increased to 969 while 439 patients are undergoing treatment. A total of 19 people died in government hospital and 58 in private. At the same time, 750 patients underwent surgery. Of these, 473 have recovered.

Mucormycosis is not

an infectious disease

Dr Prashant Nikhade of Task Force set up for Mucormycosis told that this disease is not contagious. The nose gets blocked due to infection. Slowly, this infection reaches the brain through the eye. Patients should check blood sugar daily. Construction workers and farmers are at greater risk of mucormycosis.
