India has officially begun preparations for Census 2027, a crucial national exercise that plays a major role in shaping the country’s development policies and welfare planning. For the first time, citizens have been given the option to submit their own details digitally through a “self-enumeration” facility. Authorities believe this technology-driven initiative will make the census process more transparent, accurate, and efficient. Meanwhile, a fake census application form is currently circulating widely on social media platforms. The Maharashtra government has warned citizens against trusting or sharing such forms. Officials have clarified that the viral application is completely fake and not linked to any authorised government census process or department.

The Directorate General of Information and Public Relations (DGIPR) issued an official clarification regarding the ongoing misinformation surrounding Census 2027. According to the government, citizens must provide answers to the 33 notified census questions only through two authorised methods. The first option is self-registration through the official website, https://se.census.gov.in, where citizens can submit their information digitally. After submission, users receive an “SE ID,” which will later be verified during a house visit by census officials. The second method involves directly providing information to authorised enumerators visiting homes between May 16 and June 14, 2026, as part of the official census operation.

The government has strongly advised people not to share personal information through unauthorised links, suspicious forms, or unknown individuals circulating on social media or other online platforms. The self-enumeration phase will remain active from May 1 to May 15, 2026, allowing families to upload their information online in advance. Following this, the house-listing and housing census phase will be conducted from May 16 to June 14, 2026. Officials stated that citizens who complete the online process beforehand will experience a quicker and smoother verification process during physical visits. The Information and Public Relations Department of Maharashtra reiterated that the forms currently being shared online are fraudulent and should be ignored completely.

India has not conducted a nationwide census since 2011, making Census 2027 one of the most significant administrative exercises in recent years. A major highlight of this census is that it will become the country’s first fully digital census operation. Authorities plan to use mobile applications, online self-enumeration systems, and real-time monitoring technology throughout the process. Another important feature is the inclusion of caste-based enumeration, which will be carried out for the first time since 1931. Officials believe that digital tools and improved monitoring systems will help collect more accurate demographic data while reducing delays and improving the overall efficiency of the nationwide census exercise.
