Prime Minister Narendra Modi's word on the contentious National Register of Citizens issue should be considered as the "last word", Railways Minister Piyush Goyal said on Friday.

Asked to comment on statements made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah about implementation of the NRC across the country, Goyal said: "I think once the Prime Minister of the country says something, that is the last word. The Prime Minister has categorically clarified. There is no question of NRC, no discussion in cabinet, no provision for that, no law for that."

Goyal was addressing a press conference in Margao town in South Goa district to create awareness about the Citizenship Amendment Bill as well as the National Population Register, two issues which along with the National Register of Citizens has triggered protests, some of them violent, in various parts of the country.

With Shah holding that the element of violence in the protests is tapering because people have understood that they have been misguided by political parties like the Congress, Goyal said: "I think the anger was misguided by political considerations, particularly by the Congress party. People have now understood that the anger is baseless...

"There is a misunderstanding that the CAA will take away citizenship of one particular community. No one will lose their nationality. Only those who are persecuted on account of their religion and have sought refuge in India, those who came to India up to December 31, 2014, they have been assured citizenship by this amendment."

The Union Minister also said that fake news is being percolated to create a false propaganda, which was misleading students throughout the country.

"I think a lot of wrong propaganda is being carried out. Our young children are being misled... Fake news that is being sought to propagated, that anyone can lose their citizenship... Nobody's citizenship is being affected," he said.
