Coronavirus: 70-yr-old woman's oxygen level improves after taking 2-DG drug

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) launched the anti-COVID drug 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG). It has been developed by DRDO's Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS) in collaboration with Dr Reddy's Laboratories.

The drug was given to a 70-year-old woman who was admitted to a private hospital in Madhya Pradesh. This drug has shown to good effect on the woman's health. After the woman was given the 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) her oxygen levels improved to 94.

The doctors have now also removed oxygen support provided to her. This drug is not available in the market for everyone. So it was made available only on a trial basis for the elderly woman. The family of the concerned woman had requested the DRDO to provide the medicine. The drug is said to have become available after that.

Speaking on the occasion, Piyush Goyal said that his mother Santosh Goyal had had a covid earlier. A few days later he recovered from the disease. She came back home after her condition improved. However, a few days later she began to feel the effects of post covid. This led to his re-hospitalization.

She has been admitted to private hospital since a month and a half. Piyush Goyal said that his mother suffers from BP and sugar. Not only that, she has also had cancer before. However her oxygen levels were not increasing due to the covid. Since the doctors gave her treatment but it didn't make a difference, we finally informed the DRDO about it and demanded a 2-DG drug from them for testing. We received four doses of 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG). The woman was given the first dose on Sunday evening and the second dose on Monday.

Importantly, DRDO first tested the drug on about 110 patients and all had good results. 2-DG is one of the world's leading drugs for the treatment of coronavirus. However, there is still no perfect cure for corona. Doctors are using many experimental drugs and methods to treat coronavirus. These include Remdesivir, ivermectin, plasma therapy, and some steroids.
