Manipur Hit by Back-to-Back Earthquakes, School Building Damaged in Thoubal District

Two earthquakes shook Manipur on Wednesday, and the tremors were felt throughout the northeastern states. The first earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.7, occurred at 11:06 am. Its epicenter was 44 km east of Yairipok, at a depth of 110 km. The second earthquake, measuring 4.1 in magnitude, struck at 12:20 pm in the Kamjong district, at a depth of 66 km.

The first and stronger earthquake caused panic, particularly in Assam and Meghalaya. In Manipur, some buildings sustained cracks, including a school in Wangjing Lamding, Thoubal district, which is currently being used as a relief camp.

Officials in Imphal are currently evaluating the extent of the damage. So far, no major damage has been reported in other states. The northeastern region is prone to earthquakes due to its location in a seismically active zone, and residents are advised to stay alert.
