Manipur Imposes President's Rule After CM Biren Singh Resigns

President's rule has been imposed in Manipur following the failure of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to appoint a new leader for the chief minister's position, despite several days passing since N Biren Singh's resignation. Singh resigned from his post on 9th February.

“I, Droupadi Murmu, President of India, have received a report from the Governor of the State of Manipur and after considering the report and other information received by me, I am satisfied that a situation has arisen in which the Government of that State cannot be carried on in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of India (hereinafter referred to as the Constitution)," read the notification.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned almost two years after ethnic violence rocked the state. The BJP leader submitted his resignation letter to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan in Imphal. Having entered politics in 2002, Singh initially joined the Democratic Revolutionary Peoples Party and went on to win the assembly elections from Heingang.
