Indore, April 22 Madhya Pradesh BJP on Wednesday launched a sharp and coordinated attack on the Congress over AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge’s controversial "terrorist” remark on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Calling Kharge's controversial remark “unfortunate” and a serious breach of democratic and political decorum, the state BJP leadership said such language was unacceptable in political discourse and undermines constitutional dignity.

State BJP president, Hemant Khandelwal, strongly reacted to the issue and said leaders holding top political positions must exercise restraint in public statements. He said criticism is part of democracy but it must remain within the bounds of dignity.

“It is unfortunate that Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has made such objectionable remarks regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In politics, it is essential to uphold decorum and the dignity of language,” Khandelwal said during an interaction with media in Indore on Wednesday.

Late on Tuesday night, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav also strongly condemned Kharge’s remarks and demanded an unconditional apology. He said the Congress was repeatedly committing political mistakes and failing to learn from them.

“The Congress is committing one mistake after another, for which it is having to pay a heavy price,” Yadav had said in statement late on Tuesday.

Yadav, who had visited Tamil Nadu for election campaigns and addressed three public rallies on Tuesday, alleged that the Congress had not reflected on its past conduct, including what he described as its treatment of Opposition leaders during the MISA detention period.

He also said that in the present political atmosphere, both Congress and DMK were reacting out of fear of electoral defeat and making irresponsible statements. He added that such remarks damage democratic traditions and lower the quality of political debate.

The controversy originated after Kharge made the remarks on the last day of the election campaign in Tamil Nadu, where he was addressing a political interaction in Chennai on April 21. While criticising the BJP and its alliances, Kharge reportedly referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “terrorist” in a political context, triggering a sharp backlash from the ruling party.

The statement quickly escalated into a political storm.

The BJP maintained that while political differences are natural in a democracy, leaders must ensure that their language remains within constitutional limits and does not undermine the dignity of constitutional offices.
